Why some brands have several rows: Factory tuning is often model-specific. Race skis, freeride skis, junior skis, and frontside skis from the same manufacturer may leave the factory with different base bevels. Using one universal number for every ski from a brand can therefore be misleading.

Side Edge Angle vs. Side Bevel

Ski manufacturers do not always describe the side edge in the same way. Some list the included side edge angle, such as 87°, while tuning tools are often labeled by side bevel, such as 3°. These measurements describe the same edge geometry from opposite references.

What Is a Ski Base Edge Angle?

Should You Keep the Factory Ski Edge Angle?

For most skiers, maintaining the manufacturer's original factory bevel is a good starting point. Ski designers select the base and side edge geometry to complement the ski's intended terrain, construction, shape, and performance level.

Racers and experienced tuners may intentionally change edge geometry to create a more specialized feel.
