Sizing a Helmet

Everyone knows the importance of wearing a helmet, but many do not know where to start when it comes to FIT. The importance of wearing a helmet with the correct fit is as important as wearing a helmet in the first place.

To size a helmet - First begin with measuring the rider's head. Using a flexible tape measure, measure the circumference of the head right above the eyebrows (middle of the forehead). Typically, a bicycle helmet will be described in metric units, so take note of the CM size of the head.

Higher end, activity specific helmets (like the Smith Overtake) will have a more fine tuned fit so that the overall size of the helmet matches the riders head. Less expensive, recreational helmets (like the Scott Watu) will be a one size fits all. Also, different companies will use different measurements for the sizing of their helmets. This is why the rider's head measurement is so important.

All of the helmets we sell at Suburban Ski and Bike meet the standards set by the CPSC (Consumer Products Safety Commission).

Bicycle helmets are a SINGLE IMPACT item and should be replaced after any major crash. If a helmet is crash-free it should still be replaced after 5 years of the manufactured date. The material a helmet is made out of breaks down after time due to heat, UV light, pollution, and regular wear and tear causing the helmet to become weak.
